Grade 5 Music Theory waiver (not applicable in the UK & Ireland)

We are extending our Grade 5 Music Theory waiver until 23 May 2021. This means that candidates with a Grade 6 to 8 Performance Grade exam submission date up to and including 23 May can take their exam without first passing Grade 5 Music Theory. We are making this exceptional arrangement to allow candidates who have been unable to take an exam in recent months to progress with their learning. From 24 May, the Grade 5 Music Theory requirement will return. For exam dates/exam submission dates after 23 May, all candidates taking a Grade 6 to 8 Performance or Practical Grade must first pass Grade 5 Music Theory.

Performance Grade exams

We are pleased to confirm that we will be offering Performance Grade exams every month for the remainder of 2021. Please check our Dates and Fees page for details.

Violin Scales Trainer

Have fun with scales!

Scales TrainerViolin Scales Trainer transforms the way you learn scales and arpeggios for Violin Grades 1 to 5. It contains everything your students need to develop their learning and appreciation of scales whilst injecting fun into practice sessions.

Simply download the app, select your instrument and grade and you’re ready to begin your scales practice.

What is Violin Scales Trainer?

Violin Scales Trainer is an iOS app for teachers and learners to increase their fluency with ABRSM scales and arpeggios requirements. It has been designed to tackle the boredom and repetitiveness often associated with typical scales practice.

Developed by ABRSM, this useful tool features a variety of fun musical challenges to help users learn scales and prepare effectively for our exams. Using unique and creative workouts, it helps build confidence playing scales and arpeggios from memory and improve overall technique.

How can I use Violin Scales Trainer?

Scales TrainerViolin Scales Trainer is a flexible tool that can be used by learners at home or by teachers and students together in lessons. Its interactive nature means you can play along with your instrument and develop your skills effectively as you practise.

Within the app you can refer to notation and listen to example performances of every scale and arpeggio at Grades 1 to 5. What’s more, throughout the app you can listen to or play scales at exam tempo or choose to slow them down or speed them up as you increase in confidence.

You might find the app useful to track your progress and monitor which scales you need to focus on. By recording your scales and arpeggios, and comparing them to examples, you’re encouraged to listen and reflect critically, rate your practice and keep an eye on your progress.

Most importantly, the app can be used to inject fun into practice and celebrate the importance of scales in relation to making music. Use the on-board Scales Trainer band to perform your scales and arpeggios along to a variety of accompaniment styles!

Finally, a built-in quiz function allows you to take a break from routine practice and test yourself randomly on ABRSM requirements for your grade.
